FIT TEST

Respiratory protection masks, such as disposable face filters, must fit snugly on the wearer's face. In many countries, including Italy, the Fit Test is mandatory before a user can wear any mask.

  • Qualitative fit test (QLFT)

    The test

    The result of the qualitative fit test is the result of the user's subjective perception, as it relies on the user's senses.

    During the test two test agents are used and based on the perception of these by the user the result obtained is "passed" or "failed".

    The predominant agents are:

    • Saccharin (sweet taste);
    • Bitrex® (bitter taste);

    Conducting the test

    Each QLFT method uses seven exercises, performed for 1 minute each:

    • Normal breathing.
    • Deep breathing.
    • Moving the head from side to side.
    • Raise and lower your head.
    • Bending at the waist.
    • Read/speak aloud.
    • Normal breathing again.

  • The Quantitative Fit Test (QNFT)

    The test

    The quantitative fit test involves the use of an instrument to measure losses around the face, for this reason the result produced is a numerical value provided by the instrument. This type of test appears to be more effective and reliable than qualitative tests that provide subjective results.

    There are three accepted QNFT test protocols:

    • The aerosol
    • The condensation nuclei counter
    • The controlled negative pressure

    Conducting the test

    The QNFT method uses seven exercises, performed for 1 minute each:

    • Normal breathing.
    • Deep breathing.
    • Moving the head from side to side.
    • Raise and lower your head. Bending at the waist.
    • Read/speak aloud.
    • Normal breathing again.

Mask hold

The good seal ensures adherence of the respirator to the skin. Protective masks only work when the air passes through the filter and for this to happen it is necessary that the mask adheres well to the skin. If the mask does not adhere well to the skin, the air will escape instead of passing through the respirator and the protection will be less. This is an essential test to perform every day.

  • WHO PERFORMS THE TEST

    Currently, the regulations in force do not require that the Fit Testers, i.e. those who take the test, be certified. It is necessary that they have the skills to carry out the tests, teach how to use a respirator correctly, recognize invalid tests, clean and properly maintain the respiratory protection masks.

  • TRAINING FACILITIES

    You can request to carry out the quantitative Fit Test on your masks at our headquarters in Como. It is also possible to carry out the test at your location, by contacting our office to agree on dates and methods.

    At the end of the test we will issue you a formal certificate of the result.
